The COMMUTE is a work in progress multi media project that will profile ten individual workers from around the world. The project is a collaboration with photographer Scott A. Woodward and writer Francesca Segre.
THE COMMUTE:
Resent it, cherish it or grind through it, how you travel to and from
work each day is distinctively yours. The voyage may be personal, but
billions of people around the globe share in the routine of commuting
in their own way, everyday.
We can gain insight into a worker’s values, struggles and finances by considering how the person commutes. What form of transit does he use? How much time does she spend en route? How does she spend that time? What is the financial, emotional and environmental toll of all that shuttling to and fro?
How people commute also reflects the priorities, policies, and planning of the countries they work in. Is environmental degradation considered in a country’s urban policy planning? Are governments concerned about the health welfare of the workforce? What role do oil and gas prices play in the politics of motion?
This project will help us develop a sense of comfort and camaraderie as we consider our place in the global workforce.
